Kentlands

I am starting with the Kentlands part of Gaithersburg because I live here and can walk to everything. I'll go exploring in the older section of Gaithersburg soon. I'll also start using my Nikon D80 instead of my iPhone, but for now it is still in an unopened U-Haul box.

This is one of the entrances to Kentlands, at the corner of Quince Orchard Road and Kentlands Boulevard. Welcome to my new home.

About Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg is small town in the Washington DC suburbs. I had driven through it many times in the twenty years I’ve worked or lived in this county but never thought about residing here; other places held more interest at various times. As I began looking for a home closer to work I fell in love with Kentlands, a neo-traditional town within the Gaithersburg city limits. So now I am a Gaithersburgian? Or a Gaithersburgite? Maybe a Gaithersburger. I like that last one the best.

Gaithersburg started as an agricultural hub in 1765 and became a summer getaway town for DC residents a hundred years later. In modern times Gaithersburg has been part of a Montgomery County technology corridor and houses government facilities like the National Institute of Standards and Technology, medical companies like Medimmune and local branches of well-known companies like IBM.

Kentlands is my real attraction to Gaithersburg, however. It looks and feels like a late 19th century town but was built in the 1990s. There are many locally-owned small businesses and most are within walking distance of where I now live. The adjacent community of Lakelands has lakes and walking trails.

All of this adds up to a very photogenic town and that is the point of this blog. Visit daily and let’s explore together.
